Levi Vaoga's visit to Gilberthorpe School

Last Wednesday we got a vist from Levi Vaoga. He is also known as New Zealand's strongman. Levi became a strongman by being a competitor in various town's strongman competitions. Levi then went on to be a professional strongman by somebody asking him to be in the New Zealand team because they were one member short.

He started as a sumo wrestler. Levi became a sumo wrestler by going to a town and watching a sumo competition. At the sumo competition the host asked if anybody would like to try to take out the NZ champ. Levi's friend told Levi to give it a go and Levi said that he didn't want to because he didn't want to wear a nappy thing. The host then said "You don't have to wear a nappy, you can keep your pants on.". Levi then took out the NZ champion 3 times unexpectedly. The organiser then said "Would you like to join our sumo wrestling club." Levi said "No thanks because its about a two hour drive from my house to here but if you send me some DVD's and books on sumo wrestling I can self teach myself." Levi then came to be a professional sumo wrestler he did that for about a month then stopped for a period of time.

Levi had no money and was just sitting down doing nothing so he decided to go to another small town with his friend. There was an A&P show on at the time. In the A&P show Levi saw a strongman competition and entered himself and suprisingly won. He also got prize money: the prize money was $200 and Levi enjoyed that money so he said "Where are you going to be next week ?" and the organiser of the strongman said "In another small town" so Levi went to that town and won again and entered in lots of other strongman competitions. Levi entered in the world strongman as well. This was all how Levi's career began...
